June A. Villarreal, Education Coordinator, Texas Office for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities, Austin, TX
Many cases in the child welfare system have a substance abuse issue and challenge, and having a good understanding of the needs of exposed children is important. This presentation raises awareness about the causes, characteristics, challenges, symptoms and interventions of FASD among individuals such as parents, caregivers, educators, health professionals and others who work with and live with children affected by this preventable disorder. Attendees will be able to define FASD, describe the characteristics and challenges, recognize the symptoms associated with this disorder and identify the needs of individuals with FASD.
